Asako Hirooka
Asako Hirooka's destiny keeps a protective element coming round in her ten-year phases for forty years, and holds within them her leap from coal mines to a women's college and life insurance. Born into the Mitsui family and married into Kajimaya, an Osaka money-exchange house, she carried the house through the crisis of the Restoration with coal mining and banking, and devoted herself to founding Japan Women's College and to creating Daido Life. We read the phases of destiny and time against her path: her marriage, the rebuilding of Kajimaya, the Uruno coal mine, the women's college and life insurance, and her later years after retirement.

Research Brief
What the case shows

- 1904 is a void year. Her husband's death and her retirement from management fall in the same year.
- The twenty years from 1906 are a ten-year-phase void. She stood at the forefront until just before her death.
