Ken Shimura
The Drifters, Hachiji Da Yo! Zenin Shugo, Baka Tonosama, Daijobuda. A comedian who kept all of Japan laughing from the Showa era into Reiwa. Before finishing high school he became an assistant to the group; as a full member, he became known across the country through “Higashimurayama Ondo”. On 28 September 1985, Zenin Shugo came to an end after sixteen years. What began then were twenty years of carrying the laughter alone. Those twenty years coincided with a period in which the ten-year fortune falls void, and the day of the final broadcast was itself a day bearing the stem-branch of the void in his destiny. Why did laughter open most fully within the void? We read his seventy years against the phases of destiny and time.

Research Brief
What the case shows
- The twenty years from fifteen were a period in which the element second most supportive of his destiny came round. He rose from assistant to full member, and became known nationwide through “Higashimurayama Ondo”.
- The twenty years from thirty-five were a period in which the ten-year fortune falls void. Into it, at the same time, came the element most supportive of his destiny.
- On 28 September 1985, Hachiji Da Yo! Zenin Shugo reached its final broadcast. That day bore the stem-branch of the void in his destiny.
- His is a two-sided destiny, in which fortune and misfortune arrive in turn. Within a year of the show’s close, programmes bearing his own name began one after another.
- He also holds a star that makes power hard to use at the very summit, and a star that keeps a person working into old age. He ended his life at seventy with work still in hand.
