Osamu Suzuki
The Alto kei car, Maruti Suzuki in India, the alliance with GM. For more than forty years he led Suzuki and grew a Hamamatsu carmaker into a global enterprise. A former banker, he entered the family business, which had begun with looms, as an adopted son-in-law, and became president at forty-eight. He went into India, where no one else had ventured, carrying a small car. That greatest wager was placed within a twenty-year void in his fortune. On 14 December 1983 the first Maruti 800 took to the road. What overlapped on that day? We read his ninety-four years, still at the front line beyond ninety, against the phases of destiny and time.
