Osamu Tezuka
Astro Boy, Phoenix, Black Jack, Kimba the White Lion. In the years just after the war he opened up story manga with New Treasure Island, and though he held a doctorate in medicine, he gave his whole life to manga and animation — the man Japan calls the god of manga. On 1 January 1963 Astro Boy, Japan's first thirty-minute weekly television anime series, went on air. Mushi Production, the studio he had built with his own money, split apart and went bankrupt ten years later. In that same month Black Jack began, and Tezuka returned to the summit. On his last hospital bed he is said to have pleaded, 'Please, let me work.' What overlapped in his spacetime on the New Year's Day the television anime began? Why did the greatest comeback rise from the deepest low? We read his exceptional vessel against the phases of destiny and time.
