Dragon Ball, Dr. Slump, and the character designs of Dragon Quest. The story of Son Goku, which began as a quest to gather seven orbs, drew readers around the world through training and battle, spread into television anime, feature films and games. In the three decades after the serial ended, he kept drawing new stories to the end of his life, and his last work reached the world after his death. On 20 November 1984 Dragon Ball began in Weekly Shonen Jump. In the year of 甲子, the first pair of the sixty-cycle, what overlapped in the author's spacetime on that day? Why has this story been loved across borders and generations? We read it against the phases of destiny and time, through to the decade in which the vessel he was born with released everything it held.
