Yutaka Mizutani
Ukyo Sugishita in Aibou, Necchu Jidai, Kizudarake no Tenshi. One of Japan’s defining actors, who has carried leading roles for more than half a century. Born in a town in Hokkaido, he joined a theatre company at thirteen and was playing leads in his teens. At twenty-six, as a teacher, he won the affection of the whole nation. Even so, he met the role of his lifetime only at the end of his forties. On 9 October 2002 the series run of Aibou began. That year stood in the middle of the ten years in which the waves of his fortune swing widest, and it was also the year in which the realisation of dreams came closest. Why did he bloom most fully in the most turbulent time? We read more than seventy years of his path against the phases of destiny and time.

Research Brief
What the case shows
- His destiny carries a grade of honour, yet blooms late after accumulated hardship. It is a structure that opens its own road in a single generation, without leaning on the blessings of the family line.
- The twenty years of his teens and twenties were a period in which elements that damage his destiny came round. Within them he took lead after lead and won popularity with Necchu Jidai.
- From twenty-eight, sixty years follow in which elements supporting his destiny come round without a break. True to a star that sets fortune moving after marriage, Aibou was born eleven years after his marriage in 1989.
- On 9 October 2002, the year in which the realisation of dreams came closest overlapped with the most turbulent ten years of his life. On that day the series run of Aibou began.
- He holds a star that brings blessings through public office. His two signature roles are a primary-school teacher and an officer of the Metropolitan Police Department.
