Yuko Hama
Takarazuka Revue, the Kazuo Kikuta Drama Grand Prize, the Medal with Purple Ribbon. She moved from the Takarazuka stage to acting and stood at the front line of theatre for more than half a century. Born in Tokyo, she joined Takarazuka in her teens. She married the heir to a great kabuki house and gave birth to a son at the end of the same year. She and her husband shared the stem and branch of their day of birth. Three years later they divorced, and she raised her son on her own. At forty-six that son entered his father's house and succeeded to the name Ichikawa Chusha IX. What lay in the time in which she parted from a husband of the same stem and branch and sent her child to a great house? We read her ninety years, up to the autobiography she published at ninety, against the phases of destiny and time.

Research Brief
What the case shows
- In girlhood, when the foundation of a life is laid, a void in her fortune overlaps. Within those twenty years she stood on the Takarazuka stage.
- She and her husband share the stem and branch of their day of birth. It is held to be the most demanding combination for a marriage.
- Her son sits in the seat of the stem that supports her fortune. He was born within the ten years in which that stem came round.
- In the year of her marriage and childbirth, the stem that supports her came round threefold.
- The year of her divorce was the year in which husband and wife entered a void together.
