Murasaki Fujima
Founder of the Murasaki-ha Fujima school, actress of Shinkokugeki, and partner of Ichikawa Ennosuke III. As a Nihon buyo dancer and as an actress, she stayed on the main stage into her eighties. At twelve she moved, by her own choice, to the school of the master she admired, and in her teens she received her professional name. More than forty years after marrying her first husband, she faced him in court, and at sixty-four she founded a school of her own. Thirty-two years after she began living with a kabuki actor sixteen years her junior, she married him at seventy-seven. The stem and branch of that year were the same as those of the day her husband was born. Why was the knot tied in the year of so late a marriage? We read her eighty-five years, closed in the month after her final stage, against the phases of destiny and time.

Research Brief
What the case shows
- Her destiny carries a structure of thin ties to her family line. Within the same destiny sits the combination that binds her most strongly to that line.
- A configuration in which two forces pull toward one husband is built in from birth.
- From twenty-five to eighty-four, sixty years of supporting fortune continue. The year she stepped onto the main stage as an actress was its entrance.
- With her second husband she forms a combination in which each fills what the other lacks. The year of their marriage, 2000, carried the stem and branch of the day he was born.
- In the year after her sixty years of supporting fortune ended, she closed her life in the month after her final stage.
