Ichikawa En'o II

QS-RC-059Kabuki actorAdvanced Research Case

Super Kabuki Yamato Takeru, flying over the audience in chunori, Omodakaya. An innovator who pushed out the frame of the classics with “Ennosuke Kabuki” and drew a new audience to kabuki. At twenty-three he succeeded to the same name as his grandfather, and within that year lost his grandfather and his father one after the other. He married twice: from his first wife he parted after three years, and with his second partner he walked forty years together. In his late years he passed the name on to the next generation by his own hand. And he closed his life in a year bearing the same stem-branch as the year he succeeded to his name. Why were succession and ending placed in the same stem-branch? We read eighty-three years — a name inherited, remade and handed on by his own hand — against the phases of destiny and time.

Research Brief

What the case shows

  1. His destiny carries a structure with a distinctive gap in the bond with a spouse. Alongside it stand elements that indicate two marriages.
  2. The twenty years from his twenties to forty overlap a period in which his true intent and ability come out most strongly with a period of void fortune. His succession to the name and his meetings with both partners fall within them.
  3. His first wife shares the stem-branch of his birth day. His second partner formed a pairing in which each filled the other’s gap.
  4. Born into the generation whose role is to remake the house’s theatre, he created a new style of kabuki.
  5. 1963, when he succeeded to the name, and 2023, when he closed his life, are years of the same stem-branch.
