Katsu Kaishu
Born into a poor, unranked retainer family of the shogunate, he taught himself Dutch learning, entered the navy and crossed the Pacific aboard the Kanrin Maru. On 6 April 1868, on the second day of his talks with Saigo Takamori, the assault on Edo was called off. He never took the highest office. He stood between two sides, and he protected by stepping back. What did time hold for such a man?

Research Brief
What the case shows
- His destiny is a vessel that moves the whole from behind rather than from the front, and it belongs to the perfect pattern, the highest class of chart.
- His time runs without his own choosing: placed by circumstance, he stands between two camps.
- For thirty years from the age of three, the guardians of the perfect pattern ran through three cycles in a row, and in deep poverty the foundations of the sword and of Dutch learning were laid.
- On 6 April 1868, both the year and the month stood in a void, and the energy of destruction was fourfold.
- On the day the energy of destruction ran strongest, he saved a city of a million by stepping back.
