Matsumoto Koshiro X
Matsumoto Kintaro III, Ichikawa Somegoro VII, and then Matsumoto Koshiro X. Born the eldest son of Matsumoto Hakuo II into the Koraiya kabuki house, he first stepped onto the stage at six and changed his name three times while continuing to perform. In 2012 he fell from a stage lift into the trap room at the National Theatre; six years later, on 2 January 2018, he took the Koshiro name together with his father and his son, three generations at once. His younger sister is Takako Matsu, and brother and sister share the same rare destiny of receiving the full grace of their family line. What overlapped on the day of the accident, and on the day of the succession? We read it against the phases of destiny and time.

Research Brief
What the case shows
- His destiny is built to receive, in full, the grace his family line has stored up — the same rare complete form his sister Takako Matsu carries.
- Each time he took a new name he was reborn, and the bond of succession flowed on to his son.
- The 2012 accident took place inside a structure in which the ground beneath him gave way.
- 2 January 2018 was a day on which his supports were bound into motion, and three generations took their names at once.
- A type that by nature works with strategy from behind the front now stands on the main stage of a great name.
