Matsumoto Hakuo II
Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha, Benkei in Kanjincho, and the King in The King and I. Matsumoto Kintaro II, Ichikawa Somegoro VI, Matsumoto Koshiro IX and Matsumoto Hakuo II: he has stood on the stage under four names as head of the Koraiya kabuki house. He first appeared at three, left Shochiku for Toho, and played leading roles in English on Broadway and in London's West End. In 1981 he became Koshiro IX, and in 2018 Hakuo II, each time in a succession of three generations at once. His eldest son is Matsumoto Koshiro X; his younger daughter is Takako Matsu. What overlapped in each of the two periods in which a man who made his name across the sea took up a great name? We read it against the phases of destiny and time.

Research Brief
What the case shows
- His destiny opens its way on the main stage, and turns for the better each time he leaps into an unknown world.
- Each time he left the frame of an institution and crossed the sea, his standing on the stage rose.
- The period in which he became Koshiro IX lay inside a phase in which the numbers of his fortune fell.
- The day he became Hakuo II was placed inside a time in which his bond with that name is thin.
- Sharing the same day pillar with his eldest son divides the course of father and son.
