Fujio Akatsuka
Tensai Bakabon, Osomatsu-kun, Himitsu no Akko-chan and Moretsu Ataro, and the catchphrase 'This is fine' (Kore de ii no da). Born in Manchuria, he drew manga at the legendary Tokiwa-so apartment alongside Shotaro Ishinomori and others, rose to the summit of the gag-manga genre, and kept the children of Showa Japan laughing. While leading Fujio Productions to turn out work at enormous volume, he also took the unknown Tamori into his home and sent him out into the world. On 9 April 1967, Tensai Bakabon began in Weekly Shonen Magazine. Why did this work win a popularity that seemed almost unnatural? What overlapped on the day it began? We read it against the phases of destiny and time, down to the strikingly similar destiny he shares with Tamori, who closed his eulogy with 'I, too, am one of your many works'.

Research Brief
What the case shows
- His destiny holds almost nothing that obstructs, and stands on spirit alone, free of honour and wealth.
- The twenty years from his debut to his signature work lay inside a special span of time in which the frame of fortune comes off.
- Tensai Bakabon began on the day that frame came off most widely.
- In his later years, when the same pattern of time came round again, the result appeared.
- He shares a strikingly similar destiny with Tamori, the man he took in.
