Hayao Miyazaki
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, The Boy and the Heron. The girl of the valley of the wind, Totoro living in the forest, Chihiro working in the bathhouse. With hand-drawn lines Hayao Miyazaki drew worlds of nature, people and the unseen, and carried Japanese animation to the summit of the world. He joined Toei Doga, founded Studio Ghibli with his companions, and more than once announced his retirement from feature films only to return to the drawing desk. On 20 July 2001 Spirited Away opened; it rewrote Japan's box-office record and went on to win the highest honours in world cinema. He was sixty, on a day when the force that sets his still, slow-flowing vessel in motion stood on three layers of time: the decade, the month and the day. Why did the door to the summit open on this day? What was this vessel promised at birth? We read the vessel he was born with against the phases of destiny and time.
