Noboru Kawasaki
Star of the Giants, Inakappe Taisho, Isamu the Wilderness Boy, Song of the Ladybird. Hyuma Hoshi in his spring-loaded training harness, and his father Ittetsu overturning the dinner table. Noboru Kawasaki breathed life into Ikki Kajiwara's stories with dramatic drawings full of sweat and tears, and swept all of Japan into the heat of the sports-guts genre. He debuted at sixteen as a rental-book manga artist, fell ill, moved to Tokyo three times, and drew so many serials that he slept properly only twice a week. On 30 March 1968 the television anime of Star of the Giants began, and its ratings stayed above thirty per cent. He was twenty-seven, on a day when protecting forces entered twice into a vessel that grows only through hardship, and the water of his destiny came together as one. Why did the door to a national work open on this day? What was this vessel promised at birth? We read the vessel he was born with against the phases of destiny and time.
