Tsukasa Hojo
Cat's Eye, City Hunter, Angel Heart. Three sisters who glide through museums at night as phantom thieves, the sweeper Ryo Saeba who takes 'XYZ' requests on the streets of Shinjuku, and the memories that live on in a transplanted heart. With refined drawing and adult emotion, Tsukasa Hojo brought a new allure to Weekly Shonen Jump in the 1980s. Born in Kokura, Kitakyushu, he studied art at Kyushu Sangyo University, and at twenty his Space Angel received an honourable mention for the Tezuka Award. He made Cat's Eye and City Hunter succeed one after the other, and on 6 April 1987, at twenty-eight, the City Hunter television anime began. He then moved from drawing works to creating the place where works are born: in 2000 he founded Coamix with his colleagues and launched new manga magazines, a rare path for a manga artist. Why were two signature works born one after the other in this period? Why did the one who draws become the one who builds the stage? We read the vessel he was born with against the phases of destiny and time.

Research Brief
What the case shows
- His destiny binds his own place and the place of society on the largest scale; his effort takes shape in large forms.
- The path he chose in his teens, following his own heart, became the starting point of the leap that followed.
- His twenties were a decade of tailwind in which the burden he was born with lost its force, and both signature works were born there.
- From thirty, forty years of protecting decades continued, and he moved from drawing works to building the stage.
- The day the anime began, a year binding the three pillars of his destiny into one overlapped the decade of tailwind.
