Ichizo Kobayashi
In 1907, when the panic wrecked his plan for a securities firm, a thirty-four-year-old bank clerk turned instead to a suburban railway outside Osaka. He built houses along the line and sold them on instalments, put a spa and an all-girl revue at one end and a department store at the other. On 1 April 1914 the curtain rose on the Takarazuka Revue. What overlapped on that day?

Research Brief
What the case shows
- His destiny carries strong intellect alongside thin ties to family and to superiors.
- He left home at fifteen and spent fourteen years inside a great bank without being raised up.
- The railway, the housing, Takarazuka, the department store and the films all rose in a forty-year run when what his chart lacked arrived in sequence.
- Takarazuka and Toho were both born in void years, and both still stand today.
- In his last years on the national stage, a peak and a fall came in two consecutive years.
Questions
The questions the report answers

- Why did his ventures all rise within one forty-year span?
- What overlapped on 1 April 1914?
- Why did his time on the national stage not last?
