Ninomiya Sontoku
He lost his father at fourteen and his mother at sixteen, and the family scattered. The boy rebuilt the family farm on his own, and was later entrusted by his domain with reviving ruined villages. But the work stalled, and in 1829 he left Sakuramachi and shut himself away at Naritasan. On 10 May, the day his twenty-one-day fast ended, what overlapped?

Research Brief
What the case shows
- His destiny binds self and society on a large scale, while his ties to his parents run thin.
- The deaths of his parents, the breakup of the family and the rebuilding of the farm all fell inside a twenty-year void.
- His posting to Sakuramachi, his foresight of a cold summer and the Nikko commission fell in the same kind of year, ten years apart.
- In 1829, on the day he left his stalled work to fast, the bond in his chart was completed by the ten-year cycle.
- A destiny layered again and again with the power to order wealth produced a method for rebuilding the finances of villages and domains.
