Andrew Carnegie
The son of a handloom weaver emigrated at thirteen, rose from telegraph boy through the railroad, and built the largest steel company in America. In 1901 he sold it, and spent the rest of his life giving away nine-tenths of his fortune. On 1 March 1901, when the sale was settled, what overlapped?

Research Brief
What the case shows
- His destiny sets a pattern that breaks old frames with talent, a key star in the place of the father, and a binding formed in boyhood.
- The year a superior raised him up, the year he went independent, the year he declared how wealth should be used and the year he sold his company fall in the same kind of year, twelve years apart.
- From the start of his steelworks to the purchase of Homestead, everything falls inside the twenty years when his most supportive stars ran.
- In 1901, when he let the company go, three forces of the same nature as himself aligned and reached their peak.
- After the sale, the measures pointing toward giving kept rising, and in his last decade he died leaving peace as his unfinished theme.
