Hibari Misora
Kanashiki Kuchibue, Ringo Oiwake, Yawara, Kawa no Nagare no Yō ni, and the first People's Honour Award ever given to a woman. Born to a fishmonger's family in Yokohama, the girl who failed an NHK amateur singing contest was picked for the stage two years later and became a national singer at twelve. An acid attack, a two-year marriage, her brothers' scandals and the break in her Kōhaku appearances, her mother's death and her illness — she passed through all of it and remained the queen of Shōwa popular song, until she died at fifty-two on 24 June 1989, the first year of Heisei. What raised the twelve-year-old to the summit, and what overlapped on the day her life closed? We read it against the phases of destiny and time.

Research Brief
What the case shows
- Her destiny is a structure with thin ties to her parents and with the power to convey as its largest element.
- Her discovery for the stage and her debut fall inside a window of void.
- The forty years in which she stood at the summit of Shōwa song were placed in a time when no support ran.
- The first decade in which support arrived holds her mother’s death, her illness and the Phoenix concert.
- 24 June 1989 was a day on which that support was lost twice over — in the year the calendar of her birth returned.
