Moto Hagio
The Poe Clan, The Heart of Thomas, They Were Eleven, Star Red, A Cruel God Reigns, Barbara Ikai. The eternity lived by a vampire boy, the love and death of boys at a boarding school, the closed world of a spaceship — Moto Hagio drew one theme after another that girls' manga had never held, and raised the form into a vessel for literature and philosophy. Born in Omuta, Fukuoka, she debuted in 1969 while her parents long opposed her path as a manga artist. In the 1970s she published The Poe Clan, The Heart of Thomas and They Were Eleven in quick succession and became one of the central figures of the so-called Year 24 Group. She went on to widen her range into science fiction, psychological drama and fantasy, and in 2012 became the first girls' manga artist to receive the Medal with Purple Ribbon. On 28 May 2016, Haru no Yume — the first new Poe Clan story in forty years — appeared in its magazine, which went into an exceptional reprint. In 2019 she became the first woman manga artist named a Person of Cultural Merit, and in 2022 she was inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame. Why did the same story return across forty years? What the case shows
- Her destiny is a vessel of wisdom: exceptionally high intelligence and originality, flowering in art and in special fields. The vessel draws closer to completeness the more she keeps the realm of children and of passing things on alive in measured balance. By living in a way that keeps this realm alive, she achieved a success close to that of the complete vessel.
- Loosely bound to the flow of her family line, she is destined to open her own path, even amid her parents' opposition. The clash with her mother was the natural course by which she left a place of thin ties and stepped onto her own path. At the centre of her heart, a strong current pours in from above, below and the side into a single point, carrying the role of changing the very quality and fortune of her family line.
- The place of society and the place of her parents join on a very large scale, while she carries two strong forces that are difficult to handle.
- The forty years from age nine to forty-nine are a period in which protective energy arrives without a break. Almost all of her major works were born within it.
- Her sixties form a decade for exercising her own fortune to the full, and the first new story in forty years appeared in the midst of it.
