Rumiko Takahashi
Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, the Mermaid Saga, Inuyasha, Rin-ne, Mao. An alien oni girl from space, a love story around the manager of an old boarding house, a martial artist who turns into a girl when splashed with water, a well that leads to the Warring States era — Rumiko Takahashi has blended laughter, romance and adventure into a single story, and has kept drawing at the front line of boys' manga for more than forty years. Born in Niigata, she debuted at twenty in 1978 with Katte na Yatsura. Urusei Yatsura, begun the same year, made her a star; Maison Ikkoku followed in 1980 and Ranma 1/2 in 1987. On 13 November 1996 Inuyasha began in Weekly Shonen Sunday, and in 2002 it brought her a second Shogakukan Manga Award. She went on with Rin-ne and Mao, was inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame in 2018, and received the Grand Prix of the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France in 2019. Why did all four of her major works begin within the twenty years of her twenties and thirties? What was the vessel promised at her birth? We read the vessel she was born with against her destiny and the phases of time.

Research Brief
What the case shows
- Her destiny binds the place of the self to the place of society more strongly than anything else. It is a vessel in which her own effort is rewarded directly in society. This bond can be shaken only by a bond of the same form arriving from outside. Her fifties are the decade in which that form arrives, and as long as she holds to her first resolve, a strong fortune continues.
- She holds a strong fortune of honour and the power to act, yet she shows it not on the public stage but in a specialist world she completes alone. The more she takes on heavy roles that others have avoided, the more it turns into honour.
- The twenty years from age twenty to thirty-nine are a period in which the flow of time shifts greatly. Her debut and the beginnings of all four major works fall within it. The answer to the stories begun in this period comes in the first year of shift after it ends: Inuyasha concluded in 2008, and the anime completed the story with its final act in 2009.
- 1996, the year Inuyasha began, was the last year of those twenty years; a second shift overlapped it, and two protective forces surfaced together.
- She holds the stars of one who opens the road as the first of her line without leaning on the family, and who stays at the front line as the years pass, active for life.
