Go Nagai
Harenchi Gakuen, Devilman, Mazinger Z, Cutie Honey, Getter Robo, Violence Jack. A school uproar that laughs at the adults in charge, a final war between humanity and demons, a giant robot that a boy climbs into and pilots, a girl who transforms to fight — Go Nagai broke the conventions of boys' manga again and again, and created one after another the story forms that continue to this day. Born in Wajima, Ishikawa, he worked as an assistant to Shotaro Ishinomori and debuted in 1967. Harenchi Gakuen, begun the next year in the first issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, became a social phenomenon and drew heavy criticism. In 1972 he released Devilman, and on 3 December of the same year the TV anime Mazinger Z began. The form of a giant robot piloted from within became the prototype of the robot anime that followed. In 1980 Susano Oh won him the Kodansha Manga Award, and in 2009 the Go Nagai Memorial Museum opened in his hometown of Wajima. Why did his major works gather in the ten years of his twenties? What was the vessel promised at his birth? We read the vessel he was born with against his destiny and the phases of time.

Research Brief
What the case shows
- His destiny holds the structure of a single-generation fortune, with thin ties to both his parents and his family line. It is a vessel that starts something new within one lifetime, outside the family line.
- Between the self and society a force of breaking keeps arising, while the places of work and family bind tightly. The expression that breaks conventions and the power to keep bringing works into the world stand side by side in the same destiny.
- The star of conveying stands at his centre, at his place of return and in the blessing of his ancestors alike. The more he gives freely, conveys, and is understood, the more his fortune grows.
- The ten years from age twenty to twenty-nine are the period in which his own figures reach their peak. From his debut to Devilman and Mazinger Z, almost all of his major works were born in this decade.
- His sixties are the decade in which the same form as his birth day returns. His own figures reached a lifetime high, and a memorial museum opened in his hometown.
